Penghu Islands

A week of contrasts. In the busy city, laying on a beach. Having more work than time to do it, having a lot of time to do nothing. Drinking coffee to stay awake at work, drinking beer under the sun. No nature at all, no people at all.

A busy week at work turns even busier with the arrival of two new guests. My cousin Jodie and her husband Greg got to Taichung on Wednesday. The next two night were spent at night markets eating weird food and staying up til late in the night. A lot of fun, but very exhausting. That all changed this weekend. We took a short, and I mean very short, flight to the Penghu (Pung-who) Islands. Empty golden sand beaches and clear water were all that awaited us. No people, no tourism, no trash in a place that would pull mobs of people if it were located anywhere else. But seriously, where were the people, the rum punch stands, the Jimmy Buffet music? There are many things Taiwanese people do that stump me, this might top the list. Such a gorgeous place, and no one uses it. I hope it stays that way.

Funny things from this week:
-Greg ate stinky tofu.......and liked it!!! (It was much better than any I had eaten)
-Jodie's face while looking at all of the food stalls.
-A 100lb boy picking Mike up on his shoulders at the night market. Don't you worry, there is a video below.
-The taxi driver and I acting out a plane taking off to try to get across that I wanted a ride to the airport.
-A 90 year old lady calling me handsome and trying to set me up with her granddaughter.
-Jodie communicating with anyone who doesn't speak English haha
-Jodie driving a scooter, altho I didn't see it, just heard about it.

I stayed up until 5am watching the Mizzou football game, so I am really tired right now. (But totally worth it, Go Tigers!) Below are pictures from the night markets and the island. Sorry I didn't write more. About to go eat dinner with the crew at Hotel One, the fanciest place in Taichung. (Thanks Pat Pat and Delbo!)

  1. OMG! Your face when you are air born is sooo funny. Great pics and Mike ditch the skinny jeans.

  2. Good times in Taiwan with my awesome family!!! At least traveling with the younger Voltz generation I didn’t have to rescue anyone (Jimmy); there was one close call but nothing that a good puck in a squatty potty couldn’t handle! The first clue should have been “oh egg egg…very good very good” while shoving a stick of who knows what “food” into David’s mouth….oh no – not egg, shell fish…not good not good!!!

I think I communicated just fine since most locals could speak “little English”. I did manage to learn the important words/phrases in my opinion: hello, cheers, thank you, bathroom, bye-bye and Taiwan beer!
The people were so friendly and most of them very funny and helpful. The beaches were perfect with no people because who wants tan skin (I do - I do)! I’m thinking we need to pick up some of those resorts while they are vacant and cheap! Some of the best ideas are development while drinking some beers on a beautiful “private” beach enjoying the sun, family and life!

People watching was awesome and I'm sure many were getting a good laugh watching me too. The best was everyone except the 4 of us taking a stroll on the beach with their umbrella’s and it was a perfect 80 degree sunny day - amazing! Maybe the better busy venture would be umbrella fashions! I’ve never seen so many people carrying umbrellas in my life. They carry them when it is sunny, raining, and just for fun. Of course, we’re running around the streets without any umbrella in the sun and in the pouring down rain – go figure!

It’s a crazy world that we live in but a world of adventure just waiting for us!
