Things on sticks

Mike- “What’s the weather like in Taiwan this time of year.”
David- “80 degrees and no rain, just bring shorts and T-shirts”
Mike- “Are you sure”
David “Yeah dude, it’s a tropical island.”

This weekends weather report. Temperatures in the 50’s, wind, and heavy rain.

Oops, my bad.

Our train left before 6am so naturally we were out all night celebrating Mike’s last night in Taichung. It was okay, because the 2 hour train ride to Taipei is a perfect time to sleep…if not for the hundreds of people crammed into the train.

Mike and I arrived in Taipei and navigated the metro system to Taipei 101. (Currently the worlds 3rd tallest building) We met up with Jodie and Greg to take a tour of the building. First we ate conveyor belt sushi, which is pretty fantastic. Then we took the world’s fastest elevator to the top. 89 floors in 30 seconds or so. Pretty awesome. The views from the top were cool, but the heavy rain prevented us from getting a real good view.

The rest of the day was spent avoiding the rain and shopping. Around 7 we went to Taipei most famous Night market, Shilin. It was here where Jodie ate something on a stick, I will let you watch the video to see what that is.(sorry) ***For mature audiences only*** haha  It’s not hard to believe she is Delbo’s child. The looks she got were awesome.

After that we found a bar to have a few (or more) drinks. Ask Jodie about the toilets, I could tell she was a big fan.

As it was getting late in the night, we decided to grab one last thing to eat and then head to the hotel. I was riding some good vibes and saw a street vendor offering free samples. I used my Chinese to ask what it was, the response I got was, “Ji dian” (eggs) So I took it and put it in my mouth, took 2 chews, and something tasted fishy. So I asked her again what was in it. “Eggs and seafood”. If you didn’t know, I am very allergic to shrimp and crab. So I spit the food out and proceeded to vomit in the squatty potty for quite a while. I had an itchy throat and tongue the rest of the night. But oh well, no harm done. Relax mother!

The next day we went to a temple and ate some food then I headed back to Taichung, and Mike, Jodie and Greg headed to the airport. It was a blast to have people visit. I really appreciate you guys flying to the other side of the world to see me. I hope it was fun and Taiwan didn’t scar you too much. I can’t wait for my mom to visit. I still have to convince my dad to visit. I think he would love it.

Quick note on my birthday. So I am not the biggest fan of birthdays, esp. people singing happy birthday to me. So of course at our school's Thanksgiving party last night everyone sang to me. I’d guess about 90 people or so. And yes, I did have to blow out the candles in front of everyone on my cake that read, “Happy 24 year old David” Nothing like a little Chinglish (Chinese + English=Chinglish)

We have speculated for many years, but this confirms it. Mike is a loser!

I know I usually post on Sundays but my computer power cord broke so I haven't had a chance. I will post about Mike, Jodie, and Greg's last weekend next Sunday.

Penghu Islands

A week of contrasts. In the busy city, laying on a beach. Having more work than time to do it, having a lot of time to do nothing. Drinking coffee to stay awake at work, drinking beer under the sun. No nature at all, no people at all.

A busy week at work turns even busier with the arrival of two new guests. My cousin Jodie and her husband Greg got to Taichung on Wednesday. The next two night were spent at night markets eating weird food and staying up til late in the night. A lot of fun, but very exhausting. That all changed this weekend. We took a short, and I mean very short, flight to the Penghu (Pung-who) Islands. Empty golden sand beaches and clear water were all that awaited us. No people, no tourism, no trash in a place that would pull mobs of people if it were located anywhere else. But seriously, where were the people, the rum punch stands, the Jimmy Buffet music? There are many things Taiwanese people do that stump me, this might top the list. Such a gorgeous place, and no one uses it. I hope it stays that way.

Funny things from this week:
-Greg ate stinky tofu.......and liked it!!! (It was much better than any I had eaten)
-Jodie's face while looking at all of the food stalls.
-A 100lb boy picking Mike up on his shoulders at the night market. Don't you worry, there is a video below.
-The taxi driver and I acting out a plane taking off to try to get across that I wanted a ride to the airport.
-A 90 year old lady calling me handsome and trying to set me up with her granddaughter.
-Jodie communicating with anyone who doesn't speak English haha
-Jodie driving a scooter, altho I didn't see it, just heard about it.

I stayed up until 5am watching the Mizzou football game, so I am really tired right now. (But totally worth it, Go Tigers!) Below are pictures from the night markets and the island. Sorry I didn't write more. About to go eat dinner with the crew at Hotel One, the fanciest place in Taichung. (Thanks Pat Pat and Delbo!)
